Kyrgyzstan is a monochrome landscape populated by diverse and colorful individuals. There are harsh, concrete lines: relics from Soviet days. These artifacts, which are now gradually disintegrating, are reminders of the mandatory uniformity of a past era. This series of photographs shows the grey geometry of the architecture and the myriad spots of interspersed color: the patient but hopeful faces of the Kyrgyz people. New creativity — entrepreneurial, political, spiritual, and artistic — is beginning to sprout through the cracked concrete and this new energy is visible everywhere in Kyrgyzstan. It's a long process, but a fascinating one. These photographs show Kyrgyzstan as it makes the transition from grey-scale to color.

The photographs were shot during a two week Habitat for Humanity trip to Kyrgyzstan during July 2006. The equipment used was a Pentax ZX-M SLR with Kodak 35mm color and B&W film. To see a more extensive collection of photographs from Kyrgyzstan, click here.
